Nonprofit Trivia: Learning to Increase Individual Donations

This week on the Nonprofit Jenni Show, we play another round of Nonprofit Trivia with Shawnette Good from Joshua’s Voice. Play along to test your knowledge about how you can increase individual donations at your nonprofit!

What is Nonprofit Trivia?

On our podcast, we play a game called Nonprofit Trivia to give nonprofit leaders a chance to win a cool prize for their nonprofits if they can answer trivia questions correctly. Every question relates to a nonprofit management, marketing, or development topic.

Test your knowledge to see how many questions you can answer this week about individual donations!

P.S. Want to play Nonprofit Trivia on the podcast for a chance to win an awesome prize? Let us know!

Question 1: Do donors donate a higher amount when they learn about a SPECIFIC or GENERAL impact of their donation?

The answer is SPECIFIC! Research finds that telling donors a specific impact (“Your gift provides clean water to villagers in West Africa”) generates higher donation amounts than telling them about a general impact (“Your gift provides help to a range of needs around the world.”)

Question 2: Do donors respond best to a self-focused fundraising appeal, an others-focused appeal, or both types of appeals?

The answer is BOTH. Some donors respond more to a self-focused appeal, and some respond more to an others-focused appeal. Something I found interesting about this report is the author says, “It’s critical to choose only one of these strategies and to stick with it. Mixing self-focused and other-focused messages causes individuals to donate less as compared to when they are presented with either a solitary self-focused or a solitary other-focused appeal.”

Question 3: In Canada and the US, how much did individual donors each donate during the year 2020?

This question is multiple-choice:

(A) $100 or less

(B) Between $101-1,000

(C) More than $1,000

The answer is C. According to Nonprofit Tech for Good, only 9% of donors gave $100 or less in 2020. 38% gave between $101-1,000, and 53% gave over $1,000.
